He married (1) CATHERINE LINGENFELTER. He married (2) ANNA MARGARETHA KLEE Abt. 1755 in (Bedford) Manheim Twp, PA, daughter of JOHANN NICOLAUS KLEE, JR. She was born March 09, 1740/41 in (York) Manheim Twp, PA, and died Abt. 1790 in (York) PA.

Notes for JOHANN SIMON CLAAR:

from a history book copied by Janice Harrison

in approx. 1741, Johann Simon and his sister, Barbara and their parents left Germany for America. Both parents died during the voyage and were buried at sea. The children became indentured servants upon their arrival in America. In 1747, Barbara became free and sought her brother. It is not known if they ever reunited.

Johann Simon was with George Washington and Gerneal Braddock at Fort DuQuesne in the French and Indian War and was also in the Revolutionary War. For his service, he was granted land near the present Bedford County, PA fair grounds. Served as a Captain

listed birth place as Hanover, Germany and death date as Sept. 19, 1812.

Story told to the family - this was a scam to get money from the family:

For many years the Mercer relatives took up money at renuions to pay lawyers to try to get a claim to Manhattan settled as they thought they had settled there and owned a part of Manhattan. The claim was never resolved.
